Frequently Asked Questions
Is there contact or checking?
Hockey IS a competitive contact sport, however House League is a non-checking league. Competitive contact is a legal, controlled form of physical play designed to win possession or space, often used in youth/non-check leagues. It focuses on body positioning and angling, whereas checking (body checking) is an intentional, forceful hit using shoulders or hips to stop an opponent, typically allowed only in higher age/skill levels.
Do we need any special color equipment?
Each House League team has it's own color scheme, therefore nothing specific is required. If considering Travel Hockey in the future, red gloves & helmet are required for travel.
What is Rec Select?
Your player will play in the House League games, attend practices, as well as be able to drop-in at travel team practice and fill in for travel games and/or tournaments. Players selecting this option, will be required to try-out in September. This may also be an additional team opportunity playing against other youth hockey organization's House League teams.
Can my 8 year old play?
Last year mites (8 year olds) are eligible to dual enroll in House League, at a reduced rate, provided they are playing mites with GYHA or WSYHA.
I'm a parent who wants to volunteer, how do I help?
THA relies on our volunteers to help the league run smoothly and the kids to have their best experience. We're always looking for Coaches, Team Managers, Locker Room Monitors & general volunteers (scorekeeping, etc). Please look for the signup and let your coach know you're willing to help - it will be greatly appreciated!
Is this the Lady Thunderbirds House or Rec League signup?
Please DO NOT SIGN UP HERE FOR LADY THUNDERBIRDS. WSYHA handles all of the Lady Thunderbirds registrations.
